Shawarma Queen
Next up is the hard to miss, bright yellow Shawarma Queen truck, offering-you guessed it – shawarma, a traditional middle eastern style of preparing small sliced cuts of meat shaved from a vertical rotisserie. Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the queen of shawarma herself; however, I did receive assistance from a nice man whose response to my inquiry of his recommended dishes was a simple “you like lamb?” I said “sure” and off he went to prepare it. What was I getting? I wasn’t really sure.
I was presented with a meal style dish, complete with saffron rice, hummus, and lamb shawarma. It was packed with food, they don’t skimp you at Shawarma queen, and the lamb was tender and delicious. Eating it was a bit difficult though – messy and not ideal unless you can sit down; but I would like to drizzle that hummus over my morning cereal, stir it in my coffee, mix it in my smoothies – you get the idea. I would call this dish a lamb taco. It had the markings of a gyro, just with a tortilla instead of the typical fluffy, warm pita bread.
The Verdict? It wasn’t bad, but I would have preferred a thicker bread to balance out the filling and prevent the shawarma from falling apart. I would also recommend dipping it in the hummus so your mouth doesn’t get too dry.
An extra plus- $1 baklava.
